R Paul Smith Landfill Project

  • The R. Paul Smith power plant operated for 85 years, from 1947 to 2012 and generated up to 50,000 tons of CCP annually.

  • The plant’s operators and nearby cement industry partnered with MERG in 2004 to investigate the feasibility of using the ash as kiln feedstock. A site characterization and ash sampling plan for the project was developed and dozens of samples were collected for chemical and physical analysis.

  • In 2009, excavation of the 80-acre landfill began. Over 12 years, 100% of the 3.2 million tons of ash was transferred to the nearby cement industry for use as kiln feedstock in cement manufacture.
