Richard Anthony Ellman

Founder/CEO

Overall experience: 45 years in the Environmental recycling industry. Extensive experience in management, operations, finance, sales & marketing.

MERG (Maryland Environmental Restoration Group) CEO, founded in 2002 in conjunction with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, (MDE) and The Power Plant Research Group (PPRP) for the purpose of research and business development of coal combustion products (CCP’S).

SPIRIT SERVICES, INC. Founder/CEO, in 1998 a public/private partnership with Washington County, Maryland was established to manage the County’s industrial pretreatment facility. Operations included upgrades to existing water & solids treatment that included dissolved air filtration, physical/chemical, aerobics, etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE CORPORATION, Founder/CEO,1990 in Winston Salem, NC. Service company providing on-site treatment and disposal of industrial wastewater. Collection of used oil for treatment and recycling. Operations included five facilities two of which were Part B (hazardous waste treatment facilities) in New England.

ELLMAN INC Founder/CEO. 1985, Davison North Carolina Design & Engineering company specializing in industrial wastewater and oil recycling. Processing treatment technologies included DAF, UF/RO, Phys/Chem, biological and centrifugal separation.

Previous company positions dating back to the late 60’s included motor control specialist, development of coalescing oil water separators, national sales manager for the US and Canada, responsible for the management of manufacturers reps and distributors of environmental equipment sales.


Joseph Malizia

President

Joe joined MERG 20 years ago and has been involved with operations, new business development and overall management.

  • He has an extensive background in the recycling and the waste disposal business for 50 years with the like of Waste Management Inc and Chemical Waste Management Inc.
  • Recycling projects include the recycling of waste oil for burning in Bethlehem Steel Inc. at Sparrows point, Md. Boliers.
  • Operated a hazardous waste facility in Curtis bay MD for 10 years.
  • Built and ran a fiber fuels facility in Richmond VA for Waste management Inc.
  • Helped Slough Inc. commission two fiber fuel plants in Slough England and Castenadelo Italy.
  • Worked with Cemtech Inc owned by Chemical Waste Management and Holcim cement to procure and burn hazardous waste as a supplemental fuel in cement plants.
  • Started his own brokering company to procure and ship to cement plants for supplemental fuel, off spec waste oil, and black gas.

Raymond T. Hemmings, PhD, CChem, FRSC

Technical Director

Dr. Hemmings is a materials specialist with over 40 years of professional experience in industrial R&D, academia, consulting, technical services, and project management at the science-engineering interface. A Chartered Chemist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, he is a widely published authority in Environmental Materials Technology, Cement and Concrete Materials Science, and Coal Combustion By-Products and has been responsible for directing projects ranging from basic R&D and problem solving to technical-market assessments, field-scale demonstrations, and process development for the cement, construction, building products, environmental remediation, mining, waste management, electrical utility, glass, and metallurgical industries in Canada and the USA. Dr. Hemmings is a recognized expert in the field of coal combustion by-products, and has conducted numerous projects addressing the development of beneficial utilization and management protocols for fly ash, bottom ash, and FGD scrubber materials from across North America and overseas, including resource recovery from coal ash impoundments. He is the holder of thirteen patents and numerous records of invention; and recently, on behalf of MERG’s subsidiary, the Shale Energy Recovery & Restoration Group(SERRG), he developed a patented process for conversion of intractable oil-bearing, drill cutting wastes from deep gas exploration wells in the Utica and Marcellus Shale basins to engineering construction materials.


Jim Erdman

Vice-President of Operations

Jim Erdman has 28 years of power generation knowledge. Jim has experience in various operational positions with pulverized coal and circulating fluidized bed technology. He has also held various management positions during his career managing people and commodities. Jim is also a five year veteran of the United States Air Force.


 

PAUL BLUM COMPANY

Daniel B. Baker

Appointed President-CEO in July 2017, Dan leads the company’s business development and sales initiatives. He oversees the operations and is responsible for the continued growth and profitability. In an industry first, PBCo has clean closed a 4-million-ton ash impoundment by removal completely for beneficial reuse as kiln feed for the cement industry. More recently PBCo has been responding to the US Power Industries requests for beneficial use of its coal ash nationwide. PBCo, the US Power and Cement industry are teaming up to clean up numerous coal ash impoundments in a least cost environmentally approved beneficial reuse.

In his previous role with PBCo he served as Vice President, Chartering/ Marine Operations. Baker was responsible for the marine operations and global imports as well as the implementation of the company’s FSG and Agricultural SynGyp sales programs. Prior to joining PBCo, Dan finished a four- year assignment in Nassau Bahamas as Senior Consultant for Jones & Bardelmeirer Co., a prestigious Nassau-based Ocean shipping consulting company with over five hundred clients worldwide.

Dan served as Director of Business Development and was responsible for corporate acquisitions of related businesses and assets for ULS of Toronto a Canadian group owning more than 26 Canadian and foreign flag bulk carries, tankers, shipyards, and other marine oriented companies.

Dan is an accomplished blue water sailor, fly fisherman, avid cyclist, scuba diver and a retired Canadian Ski Patrol. More recently, Dan & Beverly started Home Again Orchards LLC a boutique organic peach orchard and winery in the suburbs of East Amherst, NY.


Peter J. Romano Jr.

Peter has a degree in Civil Engineering Technology and has been in the construction materials business since 1983. His vast experience crosses all types of construction and manufacturing mainly in the materials engineering end of the business. His career spans over the ready-mix concrete, aggregate, building materials business in addition toelectric utilities, cement manufacturing and the beneficial reuse of industrial byproducts related to materials engineering for manufacturing and construction.

Over the past 30 years, Peter has held positions in Technical Services, Operations and Management serving as Vice President, President, and CEO of various companies. He has owned and operated four successful companies throughout his career serving as Managing Partner for most of them. More recently, Peter was the CEO of United Materials LLC where he grew the company from $27 MM to $38 MM in revenue before being acquired in 2019. The business was vertically integrated into aggregates, construction materials supply and the manufacturing of ready-mix concrete.

Peter continues to be involved in a variety of industry associations, currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Western New York Construction Exchange and the Advisory Board of Bank on Buffalo a division of CNB Bank. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the National Ready-Mix Concrete Association, the American Concrete Institutes Western New York Chapter, and the American Concrete Paving Associations New York Chapter.

Peter is married to Colleen Romano for over 30 years and has three children. He enjoys flying, golf and spending time with family and friends.


Sean Ahern

Sean Ahern joined PBCo in early 2018 as Manager-Operations. With over a decade and a half of experience in the shipping industry, he oversees the handling of numerous cargoes and operations at sea and ashore. He possesses a strong understanding of barging, landfills, stevedoring, terminals, trucking, warehouse, yard, and vessel operations based on his experiences as both a junior and senior officer aboard vessels, as a cargo superintendent, and in maritime administration. Sean’s knowledge of the industry enables him to quickly assess customers’ needs and develop key relationships with a wide variety of people across the world.

At PBCo, Sean’s expertise focuses on providing logistics planning and coordination, vessel chartering and freight analyses, quality control, customer satisfaction, and business development. Sean also leads PBCo’s digital initiatives to streamline customer inventory tracking, delivery, and invoicing.

Sean graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation. Additionally, he has served as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve and holds a USCG Masters License.
